The origin of the Northeast Maryland Amateur Radio Contest Society (NEMARCS) can be traced to the growth and development of NEMARC, the Northeast Maryland Amateur Radio Club. Some of the members of NEMARC share a common interest in amateur radio contest operation. Their interest served as motivation to obtain a club call sign. The Society has obtained the call sign NE3MD for use at any approved NEMARC or NEMARCS activity. NEMARCS is an American Radio Relay League affiliated club. The officers of NEMARCS are Steve Williams, W3JX, president and trustee of NE3MD, Dave Zuzin, N3HCN, vice president and Kimberly Davis, KA3SEQ, secretary/treasurer. The essence of the Northeast Maryland Amateur Radio Contest Society is proclaimed in the preamble to our Constitution. That document states: In order to secure for ourselves the enjoyment and camaraderie we experience in Amateur Radio, we constitute ourselves the Northeast Maryland Amateur Radio Contest Society. It shall be our purpose to use our mutual love of our hobby to explore and engage in activities that are fun for the membership, perform a public service, and/or advance the general interest and welfare of Amateur Radio in our community. Membership in NEMARCS is free. The only requirement is that each member must make at least 100 contacts in at least one contest during each calendar year. For anyone who has an interest in contesting, this is a very modest requirement. Some of the contests (especially the domestic ones) have very high QSO rates, and the goal can easily be met in two to four hours of operation. If you attend Field Day, you are virtually assured of meeting it. The reason the contesting society has established this requirement is that the founders wanted to ensure the club maintains a focus on contesting as new members join. Our activities focus primarily on contesting (we have very few meetings). We will either work contests individually under our own call signs and submit a score that will be added with the other members for a club total, or we may get together at one of the members homes and work contests in the multi-op category.
